The Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw was established in 1929. It is one of the largest in Poland and one of the biggest in Europe. It trains physical education teachers, sport coaches and specialists in the field of rehabilitation and recreation as well as in tourism. The University is a centre of scientific research in the area of physical education, and as a sport centre it plays a very important role in popularising physical culture.
The University publishes scientific periodicals, studies and monographs, text books and scripts; organizes seminars, symposia, meetings and conferences – national and international; maintains contacts academic-scientific contacts with numerous other higher education establishments and scientific centers both in Poland and abroad.
An academic staff of 400 persons, including over 70 professors and over 160 academic teachers with Ph.D. degrees, ensures the fulfillment of the curriculum.
In national rankings of higher education establishments the University in Warsaw occupies the first place among all other institutions educating in the same field.

EEUN - East-European University Network.
The University participates in the European Programme ERASMUS, under which part of students is able to take up studies in other European universities for a term or a year.
Language of teaching
Courses are run in Polish. At the field of Tourism and Recreation selected subjects are run in English.
Didactic and Sport Facilities
- Main Library – the collection includes 100,000 volumes and the reading room offers 400 titles of journals.
- 6 lecture halls equipped with modern audio-visual facilities, 55 seminar rooms, laboratories. The infrastructure for didactic and scientific purposes is supplemented with a wide range of computer programmes of the university.
- Center of Complex Physiotherapy, equipped with modern apparatuses, it composes scientific and didactic grounds for practical classes with students in the field of physiotherapy and biological restitution.
- Modern sport facilities i.e.: 3 sport halls for track and field, gymnastics and team games, indoor swimming pool with diving boards, gymnasiums, halls for combat sports, judo, boxing, fencing, wrestling, strength exercises, two track and field stadiums, outdoor fields for team games, tennis courts and woodlands for training and cross-country runs. for
- 2 water sport centers in Piękna Góra near Giżycko and in Rybitwy near Pisz, where summer camps for students are organised.
Students
At present a total of about 7000 students study at the University. They are able to fulfill their interests in Folk Dance Ensembles "Warszawa" and "Podlasie", in a Photographic Center "Fotomorgana", in a Theatrical Troupe "Akt", in an Arts group "Piwnica Barw", the “Zakara” Sailing Club and many others. Research works are carried out in 45 student scientific circles and their outcomes are presented at university and national conferences of the student scientific circles.
Student Sport
The University, which is the center of highly qualified sport, since 1949 has comprised a sports club AZS – AWF Warszawa with 9 sections: judo, track and field, swimming, handball, rugby, volleyball, fencing, rowing, wrestling, taekwondo. Among students we can find many times Olympic record holders, World and European champions.
Over 200 Olympic winners, who won 64 medals at Olympic Games, have studied at the University so far. Many graduates and workers of the University hold positions of coaches, judges, doctors, members of heads of national Olympic teams and Polish representations at World and European championships.
Medical Care
The medical center of the University offers medical care in basic specializations. International students, who did not insure themselves in their home country, should buy health insurance for the period of stay in Poland.
Dormitories
There are 600 places in dormitories located within the complex of the University in Warsaw and nearly 470 in Biala Podlaska. The cost of place in the dormitory ranges from 210PLN to 470PLN (56 to 124 EURO) depending on the standard.
There is also a possibility to use the University’s canteen and other catering places, where the cost of daily meals is about 40PLN (10 Euro). In the neighborhood of the University students may find restaurants and bars offering inexpensive meals.
Fields of Education
At the University education is offered in the following fields:

Studies are carried out in two stages:
- I degree ( 3 years)
- II degree (2 years)
The Faculty of Physical Education offers III degree studies – doctoral.
Students have the opportunity to take up facultative specializations in various sport and recreational disciplines; in the field of physical education and health education. The University runs also post-graduate courses in selected fields of physical education, health education, sport and physiotherapy.
Field of Physical Education
The Field of Physical Education comprises theoretical subjects, pedagogical internships in primary schools, middle schools and secondary schools, as well as training camps: summer, trekking and winter.
Qualifications of the graduates
The graduate of I degree studies obtains the title of bachelor, the graduate of the II degree studies – the title of master. The graduate is prepared to do didactic-educational work, to promote health and physical activity, to plan and carry out and evaluate physical activity which serves health, recreation and beauty. Graduates may work in schools as teachers, in clubs and sport organizations, in state administration, in culture and educational centers.
Field of Tourism and Recreation
Studies in this field include theoretical subjects, professional internships, training camps: summer- of adventurous tourism, hiking and winter ones.
Qualifications of the graduates
The graduate of I degree studies obtains the title of bachelor, the graduate of the II degree studies – the title of master. The graduate is acquainted with natural sciences, social, economic, organizational and legal sciences. He is good at geography and is able to prepare tourist and recreational offers, to run his own business and to work in tourist offices, hotels, resorts, sport and recreational centers, centers of biological restitution as well as in state administration and social organizations. The graduate demonstrates managerial skills needed to run and manage tourist and recreational institutions.
Field of Physiotherapy
Studies in this field include theoretical subjects, professional clinical internships in health care centers.
Qualifications of the graduates
The graduate of I degree studies obtains the title of bachelor, the graduate of the II degree studies – the title of master. He is prepared to work with ill and disabled people, applying prophylactics and treatment. He possesses adequate skills and knowledge to support or restitute fitness and efficiency of people who have lost it as a result of various diseases and injuries. He is able to carry out diagnostic tests and control the effectiveness of the medical rehabilitation process. Graduates are ready to work in health care centers – hospitals, outpatient centers, centers for the disabled and in sport centers.
Field of Sport
I degree studies are run exclusively at the Faculty of Physical Education at the University in Warsaw and include theoretical subjects, professional internships, training camps: summer, hiking and winter.
Qualifications of the graduates
The graduate of I degree studies obtains the title of bachelor. The graduate of these studies is able to design and carry out processes of training athletes and of managing sport organizations. The places of employment are: sport clubs, sport associations and organizations, state institutions responsible for sport.
Field of Cosmetology
I degree studies of cosmetology are offered exclusively by the external Department of Physical Education in Biała Podlaska and they include theoretical subjects and professional internships.
Qualifications of the graduates
The graduate of the I degree studies obtains the title of a Bachelor. The graduate possesses skills related to planning beauty treatments, to applying appropriate beauty products, doing embellishments treatments, beauty care and beauty improvements, as well as to running a beauty parlor.
Course admittance regulations
Foreigners wishing to study at the university should produce the following documents: a medical certificate proving their good health, a certificate or other document entitling them to take up studies and a confirmation of their adequate level of Polish enabling them to follow courses in this language. They should also register in the system IRK. There are tuition fees for studying of foreigners except EU citizens.
Foreigners in possession of an EU passport should pass an exam as other Polish citizens.
Classes in English or with English support are offered only for students visiting our university in the frame of the European LLP ERASMUS Program. There is quite different admission procedure.
